Delerlict Dinghys

10/09/2014 By Pecan Grove Marina

Ahoy Captains,

Has your dinghy become derelict? Derelict means: in a very poor condition as a result of disuse and neglect.

Please help me help you and the marina by getting rid of these eye sores.  I would like to see these derelict dinghy(s) restored with new life, washed and inflated or if you have not used it in a while, please take it home as well as any gas cans ASAP.

We want everything at the Pecan Grove Marina to be in good shape and looking its best.  Thank you for your attention and help with “Derelict Dinghy(s).”

Boating Distractions

05/15/2014 By Pecan Grove Marina

Boston

Ahoy Captains,

I hope you smile at the picture I placed in my blog.  It was copied from the freeways in Boston to try to get people to signal properly when changing lanes.  But in all honesty, do we really use our signal all the time and as much as we should?  In truth, the answer is a resounding “No” 🙁

Being distracted by talking on the phone, adjusting the music, air conditioning, etc keeps all of us from being focused on the road.  The same can be said about boating.  Please pay attention while in the PGM, entering/existing the channel and be aware of those around you on the water.

I have reference some excerpts from the USCG publication “Navigation Rules”. This publication is readily available and should be aboard every vessel. It is easy to use and helps with the understanding of how to handle situations properly.

Please be extra familiar with the following rules:
Rule 2 Responsibility
Rule 5 Proper Look-out
Rule 6 Safe Speed
Rule 7 Risk of Collision
Rule 8 Action to Avoid Collision
Rule 14 Head-on Situation
Rule 34 Maneuvering and Warning Signals

In Rule 34d is an important one to remember:  If in sight of one another and either vessel is in doubt as to the other vessels actions, the “Signal of Doubt” or Danger Signal should be sounded consisting of 5 or more short blasts.   Also note in Rule 34e, when approaching a bend where another vessel could be obscured “Prolonged Blast”(4-6 seconds) on your ships whistle.  The Navigation Rules publication elaborates on each of these to help you understand your responsibilities while operating you vessel.  I have a copy of the Rules if you have any questions.

I want you and your family to be safe on the road and the water.  I look forward to seeing you at the Pecan Grove Marina.  If you have any questions, please get with me.

All my best to you and your family.

Spring time at the PGM is here

04/29/2014 By Pecan Grove Marina

Dog sailing

Ahoy Captains,

I hope everyone is doing well.  In case you were wondering, dogs love to sail out of the Pecan Grove Marina.

All joking aside, we are having a great spring.   Our “Pecan Pride Day” was a huge success and it really addressed a lot of things around the marina.  I was able to meet a lot of you and your family and I thank you for welcoming me to be a part of your family and your lives.

We have a cookout coming up on June 7th.  It is our annual “Spring Fling.”  It is a great time to visit with neighbors and make new friends.  I look forward to seeing all of soon.

In the mean time, if you a social media guru?  Follow us on FaceBook or Twitter.  We will be having a contest in the near future and you could have a chance to win a Pecan Grove Marina hat.

All my best
Dockmaster Don

Hello Captains:

Thank you for the warm welcome as I have been meeting you around the marina.

It has been an enduring winter which caused us to shut off the water to the docks earlier than anticipated; but like you, I look forward to warmer weather and fun days on the water.  Until then, I am keeping a vigilant watch on our boats and continue to work with Lee and John on projects around the marina.

By the way, there is convenient recycling behind the fire station to help our environmental consciences.

There may be some inconvenience for a few days due to our dredging project. Keep this in mind if you are planning to come down.

When the weather warms up, I will begin to monitor VHF ch16 (using 68 as a working channel) while in the office. However, you may want to put me in your phone contacts as I have my mobile on me almost always.  My contact information is on my business card, please make sure to stop by and pick one up.

Please keep our basin clean and the fish happy! I will see you around the docks.

As a teacher, I am still being taught.

Many of you know, I have picked up hunting over the past 6 years.  More duck and dove hunting than anything else.  But this year, I thought I would try deer hunting.

So I went and bought some orange so everyone could see me to the moon and back, some ammo, and a deer stand.  I walked the woods until I found deer tracks and then I mounted my deer stand.

I came back a few days later on a Sunday afternoon to check on deer tracks and as I looked off into the distance, I saw someone using it.  I started to yell out, “get out of my stand, there is no hunting on Sunday.”

When I got closer, I decided that he could use it all he wanted.  I decided right then and there to give up my idea of deer hunting.  Hunting a “Grosvenor” is a rare breed and is Not in season.  I plan to do more sailing until duck season comes in.

Hope to see you at the Pecan Grove Marina

I have to tell you about my friend of about 2 years now.  Like me, he is short and hairy; and his name is “Grover.”  Not to be confused with my name “Grosvenor.”

So be careful who you ask for when your around the marina.  If you see “Grover” running to you, then you have mispronounced my name.  But no fear please, “Grover” is just coming to give you a lick 🙂 in my absence.

Fury friends are welcome at the Pecan Grove Marina.

I would like to take this time to introduce Austyn, born November 16th weighing 6 lbs 19 oz.

He is the grandson of Don & Joan Charland.  It won’t be too long before you see Austyn following his grandfather/dockmaster around the Pecan Grove Marina.

Thank you to the grandparents for sharing their great news with us.
